This weekend marks the culmination of a month that saw the triumphant return of art fairs to the city after a year’s hiatus (thanks COVID!). The Armory Show, the Independent Art Fair, Future Fair, Art on Paper, and Spring/Break Art Show were all proof that New York’s cultural life is finally (*knocks on wood) back on track.
For those of us whose budgets won’t quite stretch to a $240,000 Kehinde Wiley, this week's Affordable Art Fair in Chelsea exhibits works ranging between $100 to $10,000.
But we can do even better than that. Friend, feast your eyes on the MAISON 10 affordable art fair – 10 spectacular pieces of original art, all under $2,500.
1. EVA MUELLER
We have just a few copies of Eva Mueller’s magnificent Flowers & Chocolate book left. Featuring her fabulous photographs of black phalluses, each posed with a different flower, it reimagines the black penis as “a thing of vertiginous beauty.”
2. TOM OF FINLAND
The legendary Tom of Finland created images of the underground gay scene, celebrating the male figure and masculinity at a time when being homosexual was taboo. His work is collected worldwide and we’re proud to have a collection of his pieces as part of our QUEER + SEXY cycle. This print, Day & Night, is available as a print or framed, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
3. STUART SANDFORD
Working across (and often combining) different media,Stuart examines the concept of male sexual exploration during adolescence. Collectors of his work include Sir Elton John – and you, if you choose to add the exquisite Maya Blue Head to your collection.
4. DANYELLE WEATHERS
The power of nature that is Danyelle Weathers has created a breathtaking collection of wall geodes, combining genuine quartz crystals – which are renowned for their healing properties and ability to harmonize and stabilize the environment – fire glass and powder pigments, making her Black Tourmaline 12 x 12 mini wall geode both spiritual and beautiful.
5. CHRIS MARMIER
One for the Bowie fans. In Heroes, the artist Chris Marmier imagines a party where the androgynous Ziggy Stardust stands center stage, surrounded by superheroes who are all overtly male or female.
6. JOANNE HANDLER
While Joanne is a meticulous planner in her everyday life, in the art studio she relinquishes control, letting he music she listens to elicit emotions and memories that then inform her choice of color and tool. Her Heart Under Construction is a powerful, vibrant demonstration of that process.
7. JULIA RIVERA
Julia has just created a new limited edition series of five stunning sculpted women – and we're incredibly excited to have four of them! As with all her work, each one comes with a mantra. This one? Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.
8. DANYELLE WEATHERS
I mean, they’re so gorgeous, why shouldn’t we feature two? Danyelle’s 20 x 20 Sodalite Blue wall geode is a 3D dream in cobalt and gold.
9. VICTOR RAUL GARCIA
Each of Victor Raul Garcia’s works tells a story, aiming to reconnect the viewer with what it truly feels to be human. In his 18 x 12 acrylic and spray paint on paper piece, Shape Shifter, color, movement, and texture come together to create a fairy tale-like character, complete with an imagined personality.
10. PAMELA CANZANO
The starting place for Pamela’s art came from her study of architecture, and a fascination with dimension, form, and texture. Using shades ranging from organic tones to pure primary colors, she then slices, scrapes and tussles to add texture, creating a work that is abstract, but often hinting at familiar shapes. White Skyline draws the viewer in, gazing at a distant cityscape as though through mist or bright sunlight.
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
