ABOUT MEGAN SUTTLES
Megan Suttles is the founder, owner, and curator of Hot Wood Arts, an educator, and an installation artist.
Her individual artworks are mostly site-specific installations that she considers to be spatial drawings. She creates environments that the viewer can experience by walking around and through. These environments are mostly created with multiples of everyday materials such as hundreds of aluminum tubes, countless rolls of packing tape, thousands of bobby pins, miles of monofilament, many shelving brackets, and boundless amounts of hose clamps. There is usually a grid or structure that is created as a container with some kine of explosion of these objects that happens inside of the created confinement. The ideas are based on anxiety and control. She has been exploring the eternal struggle between restraint and disorder: the way we tend to conceal our inner confusion with the outward appearance of refinement and perfection. Her work has become focused on revealing this chaos; making the invisible visible again. Through gestural installations, she reveals her understanding of the difference between uncertainty and certainty.
Megan’s work has been exhibited in such places as Lehman Collage Art Gallery in the Bronx, The UnScene in New York City, The UnFair in New York City, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Gallery in North Adams Massachusetts, The Shore Institute of Contemporary Arts in Asbury Park New Jersey, The Governor’s Island Art Fair, Hunter College in New York City, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York, The OK Hotel in Seattle Washington, Hotel Chelsea in New York City, and Portal Art Fair in New York City.
Megan has both a MFA and BFA from Pratt Institute where she studied in Brooklyn New York, Lucca Italy, Rome Italy, and Port Elizabeth South Africa. She also holds an associates degree in Fashion Design from The Fashion Institute of Technology, and studied sculpture and drawing at the Arts Students League of New York City and The New York Academy of Art. Megan was an artist-in- residence at Vermont Studio Center, Emerson Landing Artist Retreat Center, Wildacres Retreat, and 4Heads Governors Island.
